Feminine nouns beginning with the sound "a", if the first syllable is the strong one, are preceded by el instead of la for the sake of euphony. In the following examples the strong syllable is highlighted:
|
el agua el águila el hambre el ala el hacha el asa |
but las aguas but las águilas las alas las hachas las asas |
Note that in plural there is no sound repetition and therefore the article remains "las".
If the first syllable is weak the article remains unaltered.
la hamaca la arena la antena |
la alacena la hambruna la avena |
When the prepositions a and de are followed by the article el, the two words are contracted into one.
a + el = al
de + el = del
Clarita fue al (a el) mercado. Los niños fueron al colegio. Ya me voy al aereopuerto. Estoy al principio del camino. Están al borde de un ataque de nervios. |
Son los hijos del (de el) vecino. ¿Sabes qué dicen del presidente? Es un invento del siglo veintiuno. Me gustan los libros del maestro. Del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho. |
When the article el is part of a name, there's no contraction:

Queremos viajar a El Salvador.
Adjectives can be turned into abstract nouns by setting the neutral article "lo" ahead of them.
Lo bueno es que ya estoy acabando. Lo mejor del libro es el final. Le gusta lo caro. |
Lo elegante es lo sencillo. ¿Para qué decir lo evidente? Lo natural es lo sano. |
